By default every poll can receive up to 100 free votes.  Sponsoring increases the number of votes it can have to 10,000.

Why Sponsor?

A poll with a 100 votes hardly warrants victory for the highest percentage.  What if someone from a busy forum posted a link to the poll, and the forum typically leaned one way.  The poll could be over before it even started.  A poll with a random sample of 1,000 people is typically said to have a margin of sampling error of 3%.  If you raise that to 10,000 votes the margin of error reduces to 1%.
